About Power Generation Confined Space Training
According to OSHA, a “confined space” is a space that is “large enough and so configured that an employee can bodily enter and perform assigned work; and has limited or restricted means for entry or exit.”
Confined space present a danger to employees because they cannot easily escape or take flight in the event of a dynamic event. Examples include a sudden ignition of a flammable substance or the shifting of heavy equipment. Either of these unexpected events can cause great bodily harm or death.
While confined space training cannot bring these risks to zero, the materials covered in the course can teach your staff to recognize and mitigate hazards they may encounter while operating within tight working environments.
What Is Confined Space Training?
Confined space training is an on-site course that is offered by Salvation Safety. During the course, instructors will thoroughly review potential hazards that employees are likely to encounter when operating within confined space. In addition, instructors will discuss what your staff should do if they encounter any risks.
There are two types of confined space safety training:
- permit-required confined space training
- non-permit-required confined space training
Each training course covers a unique set of materials and is designed for different groups of employees. The permit-required confined space training is the more comprehensive of the two.
Who Needs Confined Space Safety Training?
According to OSHA, any employees who may have to enter confined space containing potential hazards must complete a confined space training course. This requirement applies both to individuals that will enter the confined space and any attendants that may monitor “entrants.”
Specifically, professionals operating within the power generation sector, as well as firefighters, maintenance technicians, construction workers, and other emergency responders, may be required to take confined space safety training.
Failure to provide this training may violate OSHA guidelines and result in hefty fines. More importantly, failing to provide appropriate confined space safety training can endanger employees and may lead to severe injury or death.
Confined Space Training Requirements
Employees are not required to complete any prerequisite courses before enrolling in confined space safety training. However, participants must take and pass an exam upon completion of the course. The exam will include both true/false and multiple-choice style questions, and participants have to obtain a score of 75% or higher to pass.
During the Salvation Safety course, entrants will be trained to effectively recognize potential hazards, alert attendants to the presence of said hazards, use and maintain protective equipment, and perform self-rescue in the event of a critical incident.
Attendants, who are employees that will monitor entrants, have a different set of training requirements. These individuals must be able to determine hazards, communicate with entrants, maintain worker count, and monitor working conditions.

What Is Permit-Required Confined Space Training?
OSHA uses the phrase “permit-required confined space” to identify confined space that contain any or all of the following:
- Potentially hazardous chemicals or gasses
- Materials that could engulf entrants
- Any other health or safety hazards
In addition, confined space with a configuration that could trap, crush, or asphyxiate the entrant are considered “permit-required.”
When administering this type of confined space training, Salvation Safety’s team of instructors will review all of the various hazards that would cause a space to be classified as “permit-required.” They will also discuss the role of entrants and attendants in remedying these hazards.
What Is Non-Permit-Required Confined Space Training?
Non-permit-required confined space training teaches your staff how to operate within “non-permit-required confined space safely.” These spaces are tight work areas with no hazards because they were eliminated before the employees entered the environment.
Non-permit-required confined space training is less detailed than the permit-required variant because instructors do not need to address any significant hazards.
